U.P. govt. approves two 800 MW thermal power projects
The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has given its approval for the construction of two “Obra D” thermal power projects in Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh. These projects, with a capacity of 800MW each at the cost of ₹18,000 crore, aim to address the rising power demand and provide cheaper electricity to the people of the state.
- In the project, the State government and NTPC will have 50-50% participation. While 30% equity will be given for the implementation of the projects, the rest 70% of the amount will be arranged from financial institutions.
- Uttar Pradesh government and NTPC will have 50-50 participation in this. In this, 30% equity will be given by both parties and the idea is to take a 70% loan from financial institutions.
Ker Puja in Tripura
Ker Puja is an annual festival celebrated in the state of Tripura, India.
- This is celebrated after a few weeks after Kharchi Puja. This is a tribal festival that is held to worship the deity of Vastu Devata. It is believed that former rulers used to perform this Puja for the general welfare and well-being of the people of the state.
Tamil Nadu gets first flight training organization
India now has 36 DGCA-approved flying schools. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) gave its nod to EKVI Air Training Organization Pvt Ltd that will be based at Salem Airport.
This will be the first flying training organisation (FTO) in Tamil Nadu.
- As the sole approved flying training school in the region, this will provide aspiring pilots of Tamil Nadu training opportunities as per DGCA standards and contribute to the growth of the aviation industry in the country.
Over one lakh 60 thousand Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres operationalised across country, said govt
The government has said that over one lakh 60 thousand Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres have been operationalised across the country. These centres deliver a range of comprehensive health care services like maternal and child health, and services to address communicable and non-communicable diseases.
- It also provides free essential medicines and diagnostic services, teleconsultation, and health promotion including wellness activities like Yoga.
Centre releases over seven thousand 500 crore rupees to 22 States for Disaster Response
The Centre released Seven thousand 532 crore rupees to 22 States for Disaster Response. The Department of Expenditure in the Ministry of Finance released the amount as per the recommendations of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
- In the wake of heavy rain across the country, the guidelines have been relaxed and the amount has been released as immediate assistance to States.
- The State Disaster Response Fund is the primary fund available to State Governments for responses to notified disasters. The fund is to be used only for meeting the expenditure for providing immediate relief to the victims of notified calamities.

US holds title for world’s most powerful military
According to Global Firepower, a prominent data website specializing in defence-related information, the United States possesses the most powerful military force worldwide. Russia and China follow closely in second and third place, respectively, while India secures the fourth position.
- The recently released 2023 Military Strength list, which evaluates over 60 factors, also highlights nations with comparatively weaker military forces such as Bhutan and Iceland.
- The assessment by Global Firepower takes into account various criteria, including the number of military units, financial resources, logistical capabilities, and geographical considerations, to determine each nation’s overall score.
- Notably, Pakistan has entered the top 10, securing the seventh spot. Conversely, Japan and France, which held the fifth and seventh positions respectively last year, have dropped to eighth and ninth this year.
- Canada ended up at the bottom of the list due to the country’s small number of active personnel, its lack of aircraft carriers and attack helicopters, and its small number of tanks and submarines. Canada followed by Indonesia, Germany, Poland and Thailand.
Israel parliament approves bill that limits Supreme Court power
Israel’s parliament has given approval to a bill that would limit the powers of the Supreme Court.
- The vote resulted in a 64 to 56 majority in favour of the limits, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right governing coalition overpowering the opposition.
415 million Indians came out of multidimensional poverty in 15 years, says UNDP study
A total of 415 million people moved out of poverty in India within just 15 years from 2005/2006 to 2019/2021, the United Nations (UN) said on July 11, highlighting the remarkable achievement by the world’s most populous nation.
- The latest update of the global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) was released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) at the University of Oxford.

IIP grows by 5.2% in May 2023 from 4.2% in April 2022
The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) grew by 5.2 percent in May 2023 from 4.2 percent in April this year.
- As per the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation data released, the manufacturing sector’s output grew 5.5 percent and Mining output rose by 5.8 percent for the reported period.
- The index of manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, medicinal chemicals, and botanical products gained the most as it climbed 22.6 percent.In May 2022, IIP was at all time high-growth of 19.6 percent.
APPOINTMENTS
President appoints two new judges in Supreme Court
The President appointed Telangana Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Kerala Chief Justice S. Venkatanarayana Bhatti as Supreme Court judges.
- The appointments came within a week of the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, recommending their names to the government.
- The two new appointments increase the judicial strength of the apex court to 33, leaving only one vacancy. Justice Bhuyan, appointed as a judge of the Gauhati High Court on October 17, 2011, had been serving as the Chief Justice of Telangana since June 28 last year.
